Kafi • When I was studying with guruji in Calcutta, it was an all immersive affair. I’d wake up at the Hostel around the corner from his house, practice in the morning until breakfast was served and head down to breakfast with David - who was always there in India with me. Often the hostel was full of students of music, traveling from abroad, studying with various teachers in and around Calcutta. We’d eat and chat about music - who was performing where, what recordings are people into right now, who was studying what raga or tala. Then off to morning class with Guruji.

After the morning class, the advanced students would arrive. I would always hang around, keep my tape recorder rolling and just try to absorb as much as I could. This raga Kafi was captured in one of those advanced sessions. A deep alap and jor followed by a hint of the rupak melody I perform here. He spoke at length about the behavior of the Re (2nd Note), the approach to Rupak and the depth of this raga.

David is playing a Rupak composition handed down from his gurubhai, Nadu Uday Kumar, who is also the lead disciple of David’s guru, Ustad Shabbir Nisar. Uday, David and I have spent a lot of time together in India - In Hyderabad, where David studied - and also in Calcutta when we had Uday stay with us for a month while I studied with guruji.

This Kafi raga was handed down to me as a Misra style. By adding passing notes not normally associated with the raga, a unique and surprising emotion is created.
