Gujari Todi • The beginning is the end. This morning raga is one of the most recent pieces I learned from my guruji’s daughter Mita Nag. A fantastic, beautiful player in her own right, I have continued to study with Vidushi Mita Nag after guruji could no longer play or give taalim (instruction) due to his advanced age.

I’d wake up early - get the kids off to school and head down to connect with Mita on a video call. I’d do my best to play along and, depending on the dodgy internet connection with Calcutta, absorb the hidden beauty of this raga.

What strikes me about this Raga is the Komal Dha (6th) tuning for the pancham drone string. Also the unusual combinations of komal (flat) and tivra (sharp) notes. Gurjari Todi was unlike anything I had heard up until this point, and I quickly fell under its spell.
